Your Guide to Self-Tanning 101

Now that summer’s here; it’s the perfect time to invest in your self-tanning routine. While we all enjoy a fresh summer tan, it’s safer to get your glow from a bottle than the sun itself. Self-tanning allows you to get the appearance of a natural tan and without worrying about sun damage that can accelerate premature aging and even lead to skin cancer. We’re sharing our ultimate guide to mastering the art of self-tanning so that you can enjoy a summer glow all year long.

  1. Always Exfoliate

Before you can think about applying your self-tanner, you want to prep your skin. Use a body scrub to help remove dead skin cells to give you a smoother texture and allows your tanner to apply evenly across your skin. You want to pay extra attention to areas like your ankles, elbows, and knees. If you’re planning on shaving, it’s best to do this after exfoliating to help prevent ingrown hairs.

  1. Use a Body Lotion

Grab your favorite body lotion and apply it to any dry areas of your skin. You can choose to use it all over to hydrate your skin or target specific areas. Keeping your skin smooth will make it easier to apply your tanner. Wait until your skin has dried before you start applying your self-tanner.

  1. Apply Your Tan in Sections

It’s a common misconception that you should go from head to toe with your self-tanner. There’s no precise method, but you want to tan in sections. Massage your self-tanner into your skin in circular motions, working on your arms, legs, and torso in dedicated sections. Once you’ve finished applying your self-tanner, take the time to wash your hands to prevent your palms from turning orange.

After you’ve applied your self-tan, wait 10-15 minutes before getting dressed in loose clothing to avoid your tan transferring.

  1. Use a Self-Tanner Extender

When you’re choosing your self-tanning, look out for one that has an extender formula. Our DHA formula - Tanning Lotion, tans the skin to give you a beautiful bronze glow.
